While under their original publication name they created characters like Captain America and Namor the Sub-Mariner, it was Stan Lee and Jack Kirby’s collaboration on The Fantastic Four in 1961 where the age of the Marvel superhero was born. Hiding in Central America, he is eventually found by the United States military with Sue’s help and captured by Ben, who has become a military asset along with Johnny and Sue. Johnny and Sue have been outfitted with specialized suits designed to help them control their abilities. Reed is brought to Area 57, where Dr. Allen conscripts him into rebuilding the Quantum Gate in exchange for giving Reed the resources to find a cure. Arriving in Planet Zero, Dr. Allen’s explorers find Victor, who has been fused to his spacesuit and now possesses telekinetic abilities, and bring him back to Earth.
Next came casting, and having worked with Michael B. Jordan on Chronicle, Trank cast him as Johnny Storm. Trank wanted to cast a Black actress to play Sue Storm but the studio reportedly blocked that decision, and the role eventually went to Kate Mara. Mara later stated that Fantastic Four was one of her worst experiences on a film, and Trank reportedly took his frustrations out on her. Trank also picked Miles Teller, hot off The Spectacular Now and Whiplash, to play Reed Richards, and the two would eventually clash on set multiple times. Fantastic Four premiered at Williamsburg Cinemas in New York City on August 4, 2015, and was released on August 7 in the United States. Critics called the film “woefully misguided” and unfaithful to the source material, although there was some praise for the musical score.
Trank, through the help of the Director’s Guild of America, was able to negotiate a new deal where both Fox and Trank were working on their own separate cuts of the films. While it is currently unknown what was cut or taken out, behind-the-scenes footage and concept art for the film show that the movie was supposed to include the team traveling to the Negative Zone in a makeshift version of the Fantastic Car that Reed designed. H.E.R.B.I.E. the Robot was also supposed to be included, but it’s unknown if that was only meant as a small cameo.
Childhood friends Reed Richards and Ben Grimm have worked together on a prototype teleporter since youth, eventually attracting the attention of Professor Franklin Storm, director of the Baxter Foundation, a government-sponsored research institute for young prodigies. Reed is recruited to join them and aid Storm’s children, scientist Sue Storm and engineer Johnny Storm, into completing a “Quantum Gate” designed by Storm’s protégé Victor Von Doom. When plans for a third film fell through, 20th Century Fox rebooted the series with 2015’s Fantastic Four. Earlier this year, John Krasinski played the role of Mr. Fantastic in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The hero, however, belonged to a different timeline, and there’s no telling if Marvel Studios will bring Krasinski back to play the elastic leader of the Fantastic Four in Earth-616, the MCU main timeline. Besides dealing with the high expectations surrounding any live-action adaptation of the Fantastic Four, Kaplan & Springer will also have to deal with the MCU pressure.
